What's the difference between the Ring Video Doorbell 4 and previous generations of video doorbell?

The Ring Video Doorbell 4 has all the same great features of the previous generations of battery video doorbells, including Ring Video Doorbell, Ring Video Doorbell 2, Ring Video Doorbell 3, and Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus.

The difference is it adds a number of new features on top of them. These include:

  • Dual band wifi that work on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
  • 1080p HD video with night vision.
  • Color Pre-Roll enabled.

The main difference between Ring Video Doorbell 3 and Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus and Ring Video Doorbell 4, is that Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus and Ring Video Doorbell 4 have a pre-roll feature, which allows you to see up to 4 additional seconds of video before a motion event is triggered – a first-to-market feature for battery-powered doorbells and unique exclusively to Ring.

The main differences between the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus and Ring Video Doorbell 4 is that the  pre-roll video previews on Video Doorbell 4 are in color, have a higher quality video, and improved nigh time functionality.

What is Color Pre-Roll?

The Color Pre-Roll feature enables you to view more complete motion events with your Ring Video Doorbell 4 by recording before you even receive a motion alert. Color Pre-Roll will capture up to four seconds of video before a motion event is triggered. When you answer an alert, you will see a picture-in-picture view of both Live View and the four second Pre-Roll video preview. If you are subscribed to a Ring Protect plan these four seconds of recorded activity will be attached to the event clip allowing you to have a better look at what's happening outside your door.
