Using MicroSD Cards for Ring Alarm Pro

Your Ring Alarm Pro device has the capability to process your videos on a local system and store them in a microSD card plugged into the Ring Alarm Pro unit using Ring Edge technology. To take advantage of this feature, you will need a microSD card and a Ring Protect Plan.

Where can I get a microSD card?

microSD cards are commonly available at stores that sell consumer electronics and office supplies. Ring has confirmed compatibility with the following brands:

• Samsung Pro Endurance - (64, 128GB)
• Samsung EVO Select - (64, 128, 256, 512GB)
• SanDisk High Endurance - (64, 128, 256GB)
• SanDisk Ultra - (64, 128, 256, 512GB)

Can I view the Ring Alarm Pro video files stored on my microSD card on a PC?

No, the videos are recorded and stored locally. You can only view them in the Ring app. 

Is there a way to make my microSD cards secure in case they’re stolen or lost?

Yes. There is an optional encryption feature within the Ring app that will make the card unreadable if it is lost or stolen.

To encrypt a microSD card:

During the Ring Alarm Pro setup process, you will see an advanced video encryption page. Tap Enable Advanced Encryption and the app will walk you through the process.

If you would like to enable Advanced Encryption after setting up your Ring Alarm:

1. Open the

   Ring app.
2. Tap on the

   Menu

   (≡)

   on the left side of your Dashboard.
3. Tap

   Control Center.
4. Tap

   Video Encryption.
5. Tap

   Advanced Video Encryption

6. Tap the device you wish to enroll.

Is there a way to protect my video files if both the microSD card and my Ring Alarm Pro unit are stolen?

Yes. If both the microSD card and Ring Alarm Pro unit are stolen, you may “unenroll” or “unregister” the device. This makes all the videos stored on the microSD card inaccessible (assuming the microSD card has been opted into encryption).

To unregister a device:

1. Open the

   Ring app.
2. Tap on the

   Menu

   (≡)

   on the left side of your Dashboard.
3. Tap

   Devices.
4. Tap

   Ring Alarm Pro.
5. Tap

   Device Settings.
6. Tap

   Advanced Options

   .
7. Select

   Unregister device.

To unenroll a device:

1. Open the

   Ring app.
2. Tap on the

   Menu

   on the left side of your Dashboard.
3. Tap

6. Tap

   Ring Alarm Pro.
7. You will be prompted with a confirmation page that states “Disenroll [device name] from SD card encryption?”

What is the difference between unenrolling a device and unregistering a device?

Unenrolling Ring Alarm Pro makes it impossible for the device to encrypt or decrypt locally stored videos, however the device is still registered under your account and is usable.

Unregistering Ring Alarm Pro will remove it from the Ring app entirely. To do this:

1. Open the Ring app, tap the

   Menu

   (≡).
2. Tap

   Devices.
3. Tap

   Ring Alarm Pro.
4. Tap

   Device Settings.
5. Tap

   Advanced Options.
6. Tap

   Unregister System.

Taking either of these actions will make the videos on the microSD card inaccessible.

What happens if I reformat my microSD card?

If you reformat your microSD card, all locally stored videos on the microSD card will be permanently deleted, and you will lose access them.

We recommend frequently downloading and backing your videos to backup storage, such as a hard drive or a cloud storage service.
