Customizable Motion Zones for Battery-Powered Devices

Ring is always working toward improving your home security experience. Beginning October 2020, we’ve begun releasing a new feature for battery-powered devices called Customizable Motion Zones. Customizable Motion Zones have been a standard feature on wired Ring devices for some time, but they will soon be an option for Ring neighbors using battery-powered devices.

Until now, Ring battery-powered devices have used Adjustable Motion Zones. That meant that when setting up your device, you would see a semicircle divided into several parts indicating where motion would be detected. You could adjust the field of view with the motion sensitivity slider.

This is illustrated below:

Customizable Motion Zones will allow you to draw different shapes that are more dynamic than Adjustable Motion Zones. You can add up to three different Motion Zones.

Before you switch from Adjustable Motion Zones to Customizable Motion Zones there are a few things to know:

  • You can only have one type of Motion Zone system.
    • Once you switch to Customizable Motion Zones, you won’t be able to switch back to Adjustable Motion Zone settings.
    • Shared Users will have the view of Motion Zones that you choose.
  • You will need to have the latest version of the Ring app in order to make the switch to Customizable Motion Zones.
  • Once you switch to Adjustable Motion Zones, you will need to have at least one Motion Zone set up in order to get notifications from your Ring device.
      • If you don’t have time to set up a Motion Zone, one default zone can be added during setup.

  •
  • If you have Linked Devices, the device with Customizable Motion Zones won’t work as a part of the Linked Device sequence until at least one Motion Zone has been set up or you choose the default zone option.
  • You can change or adjust the Motion Zones at any time.
  • If you have more than one battery-powered device, you’ll need to change the Motion Settings on each device individually.

The Customizable Motion Zone feature is being rolled out gradually to Ring neighbors over time. That means you may or may not have the option to convert at the time you’re reading this article.

When the feature does become available on your device, you will see a notification in the New Features section of your Ring App, as an announcement on your Dashboard, or as a new option in Motion Settings. Here’s how you can access each of those sections of the app.

New Features

  • Tap the three lines on the top left of the screen.
  • Tap New Features.
  • Scroll on the list to see new options that are available to you.

Dashboard

The Dashboard screen is the first screen you see when you log into the app. The small tiles on the top are shortcuts to different areas of the Ring app. You may see an announcement of a new feature there.

Note: You can slide the tile to the left and tap edit to customize and organize the order of the tiles.

Motion Settings

  • Tap the three lines on the top left of the screen.
  • Tap Devices.
  • Select the battery device that you want to adjust.
  • Once you’re on the screen with the image of your device, tap Motion Settings.
  • Then tap Motion Zones
  • Tap Customize Motion Zones and then Continue.

Use the slider to adjust motion sensitivity from minimum to maximum sensitivity.

Once you’ve drawn your Motion Zones and adjusted the motion sensitivity slider, the changes will take effect the next time the device detects motion. To apply your changes immediately, walk in front of your camera to create a motion event.
