Verified Response for Alarms and Guard Response

What is a verified response?

In some areas, police and fire departments require that some alarm signals are verified to be a real emergency before the emergency responders show up.

Acceptable verification options typically include:

  • Visual verification - an eye witness at the location sees that it’s a true emergency
  • Using your camera’s live feed to see that there is a real emergency
  • Ring’s Guard Response service

What is Guard Response?

Ring offers Guard Response, a service that will send an unarmed guard to your location to verify an alarm event and then contact emergency responders directly. The guard will not intervene in an emergency.

Guard Response is easy to use. Simply sign up using the Ring app, and you will only be charged if you use it. If you have an emergency, Guard Response costs $75 for the first 20 minutes, and $1.25 for each minute after.

If your area requires verification and you don’t sign up for Guard Response or use another verification method, local emergency responders may refuse to show up at your location, even in a real emergency.

What happens in an emergency if my area requires verified response?

Burglar alarm signals

Note: Please scroll down for a list of cities that require verified burglar alarm signals. For all other locations, click here for the standard burglar alarm response plan.

If you have signed up for Guard Response, and your Ring Alarm sends a burglar alarm signal to the monitoring center:

  1. The monitoring center will first attempt to call all emergency contacts.
      • If no one can be reached, then the monitoring center will request Guard Response.
      • If any contacts answer the phone, but none can remember the verbal password, Guard Response is dispatched.
      • If any contact answers the phone, correctly says the verbal password and asks for help, the monitoring center will request Guard Response.
      • If a contact does not remember the verbal password but asks for help, the monitoring center will request Guard Response.
  2. The guard will drive to your Ring Alarm location, and see if there is a real emergency or a false alarm. If there is an emergency, the guard will call emergency responders directly.

Smoke alarm signals

Note: Only the Las Vegas Metro Area requires verified response for smoke alarm signals. For all other locations, click here for the standard smoke alarm response plan.

If you have signed up for Guard Response, and your Ring Alarm sends a smoke alarm signal to the monitoring center:

  1. The monitoring center will attempt to contact your first emergency contact.
    • If no one answers, the monitoring center will request Guard Response.
    • If your first emergency contact answers, the monitoring center will request Guard Response unless it’s a false alarm and the contact cancels.
  2. The monitoring center will attempt to call the emergency contacts to notify them that the Guard Response has been dispatched.
