Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) on a modern home's front door.

Using a Wedge Kit to Position Video Doorbell (2nd Gen)

Since there are a total of ten different models, it's important to match the correct accessory with your Ring Video Doorbell. Tap here to confirm your doorbell type to match with the correct accessory.

Solar chargers, Wedge Kits, and Corner Kits

Solar chargers can be used with a Wedge Kit or a Corner Kit. However, only one wedge or one corner mount is recommended, as stacking more than one wedge or corner mount can change the angle of the doorbell enough to cast a shadow on the solar charger, making it less effective. Solar panels should be placed in direct sunlight for optimal charging performance.

Optimal Video Doorbell angles

Your Ring Video Doorbell "sees" the world in two ways. First, through a camera with a wide view of the world as illustrated below:

Secondly, through a network of "PIR" or passive infrared sensors that the Ring Video Doorbell uses for motion detection. In the illustration below, you can see that the motion sensors have a much more focused field-of-view than the camera and that this view is pointed downward to catch motion within five to 15 feet of the Ring Doorbell and exclude motion sources outside that range.

What to know about siding

If your house has siding, you'll need to take the angle of the siding into account when mounting your Ring Video Doorbell. As illustrated below, mounting the Ring Video Doorbell on siding will point the Ring Doorbell up, making it much more likely to catch passing traffic than the heat of visitors.

If you mount your Ring Video Doorbell on siding, a wedge kit will properly angle your Ring Video Doorbell.

What to know about stairs

If your door is above ground level with stairs leading up to it, this can cause your Ring Video Doorbell to miss visitors walking up your stairs and cause you to get motion alerts from passing traffic.

The solution in this case is to once again use a wedge kit to lower the angle of your Ring Video Doorbell. Please note that wedge kits are paintable to match your house color.
