Understanding Advanced Pre-Roll for Wired Ring Devices

If you’re subscribed to Ring Protect, your Ring devices record video each time someone triggers their motion sensors or presses the doorbell button (if applicable). Some Ring devices have a function called Advanced Pre-Roll, which adds additional video to the start of these recordings, so you can see what happened before the event was triggered.

Note: If you own a Video Doorbell 3 Plus, its Pre-Roll function works in a different way.

What is Advanced Pre-Roll?
Wired Ring devices continuously capture up to six seconds of video into internal memory. If you have Ring Protect, when an event is recorded, this “Pre-Roll” footage is added to the start of the recording. This gives you a fuller picture of what happened.

This is the only time Pre-Roll video is stored in Ring systems.

Do I have to use Advanced Pre-Roll?
Yes, Advanced Pre-Roll is always enabled for wired Ring devices.

Do I have to purchase Ring Protect to be able to use Advanced Pre-Roll?
Yes. Advanced Pre-Roll enhances recordings of events, and event recording is one of the advantages to subscribing to Ring Protect.
