Enhancing Security with Two-Step Verification

Two-Step Verification is currently rolling out to all customers and will be available in the coming weeks.

The purpose of Two-Step Verification is to protect you from unauthorized logins into your Ring account. This feature will be enabled by default for all users and, unlike Two-Step Authentication, there is no user option to opt out.
Every time you log into Ring (any app, ring.com or Ring Community) you will receive a One-Time Passcode (OTP) via your *email address on file, and you will have to enter a 6-digit code to successfully log in.

  • The passcode expires after 10 minutes.
  • You can request "Resend code" after 60 seconds if you haven’t received it.
  • If you continue to use your mobile apps every 30 days, you will not have to login via Two-Step Verification (unless you log out, or "Remove All" authorized devices from Control Center).

*If you have Two-Step Authorization enabled, you will continue to receive your verification passcodes via text message and will not receive them in email.

 

Troubleshooting

If you are receiving an “error occurred” or “bad connection” similar error message when logging into your Ring App, this is because your app requires an update to continue. You can update your app by following this link: https://ring.com/gettheapp

The following Ring app versions do not have the ability to utilize Two-Step Verification:

iOS 5.12 or earlier

  • You may receive an error message stating, “Your internet connection is not currently working. Please try again.

Android 3.12 or earlier

  • You may receive an error message stating, “An error occurred trying to perform the operation. Try again later.

What is Two-Step Verification?

While we already offer two-step authentication to neighbors, starting today we’re making a second layer of verification mandatory for all users when they log into their Ring accounts. This added authentication helps prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to the Ring account.

With every login on a Ring account, users receive a one-time, six-digit code to verify their login attempt. That code will need to be entered before we will allow access to the Ring account. The same goes for any shared users that the user has on their account. Users can choose to receive this one-time passcode via the email address they have listed on their Ring account or on your phone as a text message (SMS). Requiring this code will help ensure that the person trying to log into your account is you. This mandatory second layer of verification will be rolling out to all users beginning today.

Is this feature available for every Ring user? Is it mandatory?

Yes. Upon every Ring account login, users will be prompted to enter a one-time, six digit code to verify the login attempt. This applies to primary account holders as well as Shared Users.
If a user already has SMS verification enabled, they will receive the one-time six digit code through SMS instead of an email to verify their login.

Why is Ring doing this?

The Two-Step Verification is a way of securing your account from bad actors by making you know and identify any browser or device being used to access your account.

Am I going to have to do this every time I log into my account?

No. If you continue to use your mobile apps every 30 days, you will not have to login via Two-Step Verification (unless you log out or "Remove All" authorized devices).

How long does the six-digit code last?

The code will last for ten minutes. After that, you'll need to attempt to log back in to get a new code.
What happens if I don't receive the code at my email address?
Be sure to check your spam filter for the code. If you still haven't received it, you can ask for the code to be re-sent after 60 seconds have elapsed.

I don’t see this feature in my app / I am not being prompted to enter the six digit code in my app, why can’t I use this feature?

Ring has millions of users so we have to conduct phased rollouts, and all users will see this feature in the coming weeks.

If you received the two-step verification email, but are unable to enter the six-digit code in the Ring app, you will need to update your Ring app to the latest version.

Are users being forced to log out of their accounts because of this feature?

No.

Can you opt out of two-step verification?

No.

Do I have to turn on two-step verification?

No. This is a mandatory extra layer of security for all our neighbors.

If a neighbor has SMS verification turned on, will they still receive the two-step verification email?

No. If a user already has SMS verification enabled, they will receive the one-time six digit code through SMS instead of an email to verify their login.

What is the difference between 2FA (SMS) and 2SV (email)?

While we already offered two-step authentication to neighbors, it was opt-in and not required. Starting today we’re making a second layer of verification mandatory for all users when they login to their Ring accounts, extending this account protection to all users and not only those who opted into SMS-based verification.

What if I set up my Ring account with an email I no longer use / have access to?

If a user has an email tied to their Ring account that they no longer use or have access to, they should call Ring Community Support for assistance at ring.com/callus.

Will Shared Users receive two-step verification emails as well?

Yes. All Ring accounts, including shared users, will need to authenticate all logins to their Ring account by using two-step verification. All new shared user logins must be authenticated by entering the one-time, six-digit code in the Ring app. If a shared user already has SMS verification enabled, they will receive the one-time six digit code through SMS instead of an email to verify their login.

What about the Neighbors app or Rapid Ring app?

Yes, two-step verification is mandatory for all logins on the Neighbors app, Rapid Ring app, Ring.com, and Ring Community as well.
