Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus on a modern home's front door.

Using a Wedge Kit to Properly Position Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus

It's important to get the correct accessory for the Ring doorbell that you have. There are many different models. If you need to verify the name of your doorbell, click here to find the information in the Ring app.

If you're installing a Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus on a house with aluminum siding or in a house where the door is atop a set of stairs you can use a wedge piece to properly position a Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus to catch visitor motion but minimize "false positive" motion alerts such as cars in the street.

Both of these situations require the use of a wedge piece to properly angle your Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus to catch the motions your want while avoiding the motions you don't. This article will briefly explain how your Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus sees the world and how to use your wedge piece.

There is also a Corner Kit for the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus.

Looking downward

Your Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus "sees" the world in two ways. First through a camera that has a very wide view of the world as illustrated below:

Second, through a network of "PIR" or passive infrared sensors that the Ring Doorbell uses for motion detection. In the illustration below you can see that the motion sensors have a much more focused field-of-view than the camera and that this view is pointed downward to catch motion (as much as possible) within five to 30 feet of the Ring Doorbell and exclude motion sources outside that range.

Dealing with siding

If your house has siding, you'll need to take the angle of the siding into account when mounting your Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus. As illustrated below, mounting the Ring Video Doorbell  3 Plus on siding will point the Ring Doorbell up, making it much more likely to catch passing traffic than the heat of visitors.

If you mount your Ring Video Doorbell 3 on siding, a wedge piece will properly angle your Ring Doorbell.

Dealing with Stairs

If your door is above ground level with stairs leading up to it, this can cause your Ring Doorbell to miss visitors walking up your stairs and cause you to get motion alerts from passing traffic.

The solution in this case is to once again use a wedge piece to lower the angle of your Ring Doorbell.

Please note that wedge pieces are paintable to match your house color.
