Using a Wedge Kit to Properly Position Ring Video Doorbell 3

If you're installing a Ring Video Doorbell 3 on a house with aluminum or cedar siding, or on a house where the door is atop a set of stairs, you can use a wedge piece to properly position Ring Video Doorbell 3 to catch visitor motion while minimizing "false positive" motion alerts caused by things like cars in the street or passersby.

Video Doorbell angles

Your Ring Video Doorbell 3 "sees" the world in two ways. First, through a camera that has a very wide view of the world as illustrated below:

Second, through a network of "PIR" or passive infrared sensors that Ring Video Doorbell 3 uses for motion detection. In the illustration below you can see that the motion sensors have a much more focused field-of-view than the camera, and that this view is pointed downward to catch motion (as much as possible) within five to 30 feet of your doorbell while excluding motion sources outside that range.

Mounting your Video Doorbell on siding

If your house has siding, you'll need to take the angle of the siding into account when mounting your Ring Video Doorbell 3. As illustrated below, mounting your Ring Video Doorbell 3 on siding will point the doorbell slightly upward, making it more likely to trigger alerts for passing traffic instead of only approaching visitors.

If you mount your Ring Video Doorbell 3 on siding, a wedge piece will properly angle your doorbell.

Mounting your Video Doorbell at the top of stairs

If your door is above ground level with stairs leading up to it, this can cause your Ring Video Doorbell 3 to miss visitors walking up your stairs and cause you to get motion alerts from passing traffic.
