Which Ring devices will be using this new engine?
The new engine will be available on the following Ring devices:
- Floodlight Cam
- Spotlight Cam Wired
- Spotlight Cam Mount
- Ring Doorbell Pro
- Ring Doorbell Elite
- Stickup Cam Wired
Does this upgrade cost anything?
No. The upgrade will be free and seamless for all devices.
Do I need to do anything to get this upgrade?
No. This upgrade will automatically roll out during an ordinary firmware upgrade.

How do I know that my device has received the upgrade?
If your device is running up-to-date firmware, that means the device is running the new motion detection engine.
To see your version number, check the device information panel in your Ring app.
Can I choose which motion detection engine my device uses?
No. We are doing our best to improve motion detection on all our devices. Once updated, all powered devices will be using the new motion detection engine.
Will changing to the new detection engine have any impact on my motion settings?
No, your motion settings will remain the same. Because of the sensitivity of the new engine, however, you may need to adjust your motion settings to a level you’re comfortable with.
Will this increase or decrease the number of motion notifications I get on my device?
With the new engine you should get fewer false positive events from things like small tree branch movement, light changes, or shadows moving. On the other hand, the new motion detection engine is more sensitive which means that you may receive more motion alerts from smaller events.
Does the new engine alter the number of times my lights turn on on my Floodlight Cam or my Spotlight Cam?
No. the lights on those devices turn on in response to a separate infrared system. The new engine will not cause your light to go on more often.
Will this increase or change the range of motion detection?
No. This new motion detection engine doesn’t increase the range of motion detection. It improves motion detection accuracy.
Is there a way to specify a motion type like a human, vehicle, or animal?
Currently, the only available type of object to be selected is human. You can turn it on by setting motion sensitivity to “Human Only” mode.
Will the new motion detection engine be available for battery-powered devices?
No. The new engine works on wired devices only.
