Updating the Firmware for Ring Alarm Keypad (All Generations)

Occasionally we need to make firmware updates to the devices on your Ring Alarm system. Firmware is software that runs on devices, such as Ring Alarm Keypads, and these updates help us improve the performance and stability of your Alarm system. Updating your firmware is simple and your home will remain safe and secure throughout the process.

Why do my Keypads only update when Ring Alarm is disarmed?

In order to keep your home secure at all times, firmware updates will only begin when your Ring Alarm is disarmed. You can schedule updates anytime, and still use your Ring Alarm as usual, arming and disarming* your system when needed. If there are multiple Keypads which require updates, they will take place one at a time.

Since Keypads cannot be used to arm and disarm during the firmware update process, you can use your Ring app* to arm and disarm if needed during the update.

*Ring Alarm and all Ring Alarm accessories require a subscription for digital notifications, in-app features, digital arming/disarming, and integration with other Ring, Echo, and third party products. Subscription sold separately. View ring.com/protect-plans for pricing and details.

Before You Start

  • Full Power:
Before you begin any updates, make sure that each Keypad has plenty of power. Your keypad will also need to be unplugged and then plugged back in before starting.
    • If that doesn’t wake up your Keypad, you will need to use a pin to quickly press the pinhole reset button in the back. Once the update begins, keep your Keypad plugged in until the update completes.
  • Owners Only:
Only Ring Alarm system Owners can manage firmware updates. If you’re a Shared User, please ask the Owner to make any required updates.
  • Use the app:
While the Keypad is updating, your Shared Users will need to use the app in order to arm and disarm. Guest Users will not be able to use the Keypad.

How to Update Your Keypad Firmware

Begin by unplugging your Keypad and plugging it back in.

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Open the
    Menu (≡)
    , tap
    Devices
    , then tap the
    Alarm Base Station
    .
  3. On the alarm device list, tap the blue status bar at the bottom of the screen.

Additional Information about Firmware Updates

Anytime firmware updates are available for your Ring Alarm Keypads, you’ll see a red dot on the hamburger menu. When you tap the hamburger menu (≡), you’ll see a red circle icon with a number next to “Devices.” Tap “Devices” to go to the device list where you’ll see “Device Updates Available” blue status text below your Base Station. When you tap your Base Station to go to the Alarm device list, you’ll see a blue status bar explaining where to manage firmware updates. Tap the blue bar and you’ll be taken to a screen where you can view and manage all of your Alarm device firmware updates.

To begin scheduling updates for your Keypads, tap each Keypad name. You’ll be provided with more information about the update process, like how long it should take, and a button to schedule the update. They Keypad update will take about 20 minutes.

When you’ve scheduled a Keypad to update, the update will be queued to occur when your system is disarmed and no other device is updating. You can schedule multiple Keypad updates, but again, only one Keypad or device update can happen at a time.

Once you’ve scheduled all of your devices to update, you can now just let it run. You’ll receive notifications* when updates are complete, and you can check back any time to see the update progress within the app.

Other Important Factors

  • Arming during scheduled updates:
If you need to arm your Ring Alarm while updates are scheduled, go right ahead. If your Alarm is armed during the time when the Keypad is scheduled to begin, it will simply wait until the next time you disarm to begin updating.
  • Arming while Keypad is updating:
While the Keypad is updating, you will need to use your Ring app to arm and disarm.*
  • Cancel Anytime:
If you need to cancel a Firmware update before it begins, you can do so in the app by tapping
    X
next to Keypads with “Updates Scheduled” or in “Updating” in progress. Once canceled, you will need to reschedule an update at a later time.

Troubleshooting

Sometimes your Keypad may require action in order to kick off the update. Simply unplug your Keypad and plug it back in. If your Keypad is still asleep, you will need to use a pin to quickly press the pinhole reset button in the back, as shown in the screen below.
