Compatibility and usage

Do I need a Ring Bridge to use my Pathlights?

Without a Ring Bridge, Pathlights will only function as standard motion-sensing lights. Get the most out of your Pathlights by pairing it with a Ring Bridge.

Ring Bridge acts as a central hub integrating Ring Smart Lights, Motion Sensors and Transformers into your Ring system using the Ring app to connect to your home wifi network. Connect Pathlights using Bridge and the Ring app to create Groups of Smart Lights and get motion detection alerts (Ring Protect Plan subscription required).

How many Pathlights and other Smart Lights can I connect to the Ring Bridge?

The Ring Bridge can support up to 50 Smart Lighting devices. These devices can all be in one Group or multiple Groups.

Do Ring Pathlights work with Alexa?

Yes, Ring Pathlights products work with select Alexa-enabled devices. You can turn on and off lights or groups of lights, use Pathlights as Alexa Routines triggers, and adjust settings like brightness, and manage alerts.

How often will I need to change batteries?

Ring Pathlights are designed to last around a year on one set of batteries under normal use. Battery life is dependent on device settings, usage, and other factors such as the weather. Brightness may decrease as battery life is depleted.

Ring recommends using standard alkaline batteries in Pathlights. Rechargeable batteries will work in Ring Pathlights, though they may not last as long as alkaline batteries. Heavy duty batteries should not be used in Ring Pathlights. Lithium batteries will also work in Ring Pathlights and are recommended when the weather is extremely cold.

Can Ring Pathlights be set to activate during the day?

Yes. If desired, you can change settings in the Ring app to let motion trigger your lights in the daytime.

Can Ring Pathlights be set to automatically light up at night?

Yes. The Ring app has a Dawn to Dusk feature that will have the lights glow softly when the sun goes down and turn off when it comes back up.

Can I share control of the Pathlights with other people?

Yes, but the Pathlights have to be placed in a Group and the Group must be shared. The amount of control they have over the Pathlights depends on their level of access (Role). The abilities each Role has are listed below:

  • Owner:
The Owner has full control over all Pathlights functions and can also add new Shared Users to give limited control over the Pathlights. They can add the Pathlights to Groups or remove them. Owners can also manually turn Groups on and off and determine how long they stay on as well as disabling individual lights within a Group so they don't activate when motion is detected.
  • Shared User:
A Shared User only has limited control over the Pathlights. Shared Users can also manually turn Groups on and off and receive notifications from the Group.
  • Guest User:
Guest Users cannot access Steplight controls.
