Sharing PIN Codes with Integrated Locks and the Ring Alarm

One of the most important aspects of how your Ring Alarm and the Ring app interact is deciding who has access to your system. Certain people need total control over the system while others only need to be able to perform a few simple functions. The owner, for example, needs to be able to configure every aspect of their devices. A neighbor who checks the house while the family is on vacation needs very limited access. Fortunately, there is a system in place to deal with this situation: Users and Roles.

A User is anyone who has any level of access to the system. Each User will be assigned a Role. Their Roles determine how much access he or she has to Ring devices and features. The User who sets up the system will automatically become the Owner. An Owner can invite a User to the system as a Guest User.

  • Owner: In addition to being able to view cameras and view and share videos,  the Owner can also add new Users, adjust system settings, change account information, and grant access to Shared Users. If you have a Ring Alarm, the Owner can also change monitoring settings, arm and disarm the Ring Alarm System, and has complete access to integrated locks.
  • Guest User: A Guest User cannot change system settings or access account information but can view cameras and view and share videos,  (Access to particular cameras can be granted or taken away by the Owner.) If you have a Ring Alarm system and an integrated Z-Wave lock, the Guest User can also arm and disarm the Ring Alarm system and unlock any lock they’ve been given access to by the Owner using a PIN code.

How does a Shared User get their PIN code? 

When you offer a Shared User access to your system, you will be asked to create a PIN code for them. That PIN code will work for both arming and disarming the system as well as accessing the integrated lock. 

When I share a code with a person, will I be able to track that specific person in the device history?

Yes. The history of specific codes will be tracked in your device’s history list. You will be able to tell exactly when certain codes were used to access the locks.

How do I share a code with a non-Ring User? Can I send codes via e-mail?

Non-Ring Users can still be added to the system as Guest Users. You will have to tell them their code (in person, by note, over the phone, via e-mail, however), but the non-Ring Users will still be able to use that code with any devices they're shared to.

Is there a way to manage all active codes?

Yes. Each code can be managed through the User’s profile page.
