Understanding router security settings
Learn how to fix wifi issues with your Ring device by changing your router settings.
Troubleshooting connectivity issues
Before attempting the solutions in this article, try these troubleshooting steps:
More tips for improving signal strength
- Move your Ring device closer to your router.
- to your network.
- Consider annetwork as a replacement for your existing wifi router. This works with Ring devices without any special setup.
Router security settings
Ring devices deliver advanced features, such as notifications, video streams, and two-way audio. Your router must allow your Ring device to reach Ring servers for these features to work properly. Important: These recommendations involve changing the security settings for your network. Contact your internet service provider or router manufacturer if you need help.
Opening ports for Ring devices
Your router needs to let Ring use certain connection points (called ports). Here are the main ones Ring using these ports might help your Ring devices connect to your wifi.
Protocol | Port |
---|---|
HTTP | Port 80 (not applicable to Ring Alarm Base Station) |
HTTPS | Ports 443, 9002 |
DNS | Port 53 |
NTP | Port 123 |
TCP | Ports 443, 8557, 9998, 9999, 19302 |
UTP | Ports ranging from 16500 to 65000 |
Setting up router connections:
- Set a fixed address for your Ring
- Save this address in your router
- Open the needed connections
Tip: Look for "Advanced Options" when setting up your Ring to set a fixed address.
Using a special connection zone (DMZ)
Your router has a special area where one Ring device can work better. This area (DMZ) often fixes connection problems quickly.
Cellular-based routers
If you're using a hotspot or cell router, set it to IPv4 or IPv4v6 instead of IPv6.
Changing your firewall settings
If your Ring device still won't connect:
- Start with your router's safety on High
- Try Medium if that doesn't work
- Try Low if you still have trouble
Warning: Never turn off your router's security completely - this could let anyone access your network. Important: Do not turn off security completely, as this could put your network at risk.
