It is possible to connect a Ring Doorbell directly to a low voltage 8-24VAC transformer without a home doorbell kit. Only AC transformers work; DC is not supported. This is an optional alternate configuration for those who plan to install a compatible transformer without a preexisting home doorbell.
If you aren't sure about performing the wiring and soldering involved with this optional setup, that's okay. Ring Doorbell works great on battery power with no need to attach any wires.
If you do plan to connect directly to a transformer and do not have a home doorbell, a resistor is REQUIRED in place of a mechanical or electronic doorbell kit for this alternate configuration to work successfully. Do NOT install a diode.
Here are links to resistors we have tested and recommend:
If those are out of stock, we recommend looking up the part number on other sites to find the same resistor.
