Can I use the solar charger and a wedge kit or corner kit together?
Solar chargers can be used with a wedge kit or a corner kit. However, only one wedge, or one corner mount is recommended. Stacking more than one wedge or corner mount changes the angle of the doorbell and can cast a shadow on the solar charger, making it less effective. Solar chargers should have direct sunlight for optimal performance.
I'm installing my Ring Doorbell 2 on a house with aluminum siding or where the door is atop a set of stairs. How do I properly position my Ring Video Doorbell 2 to catch visitor motion but minimize "false positive" motion alerts (e.g. cars in the street)?
Both of these situations require the use of a wedge kit (included in your Ring Video Doorbell 2 packaging) to properly angle your Ring Video Doorbell 2 to catch the motions your want while avoiding the motions you don't. This article will briefly explain how your Ring Video Doorbell 2 sees the world and how to use your wedge kit.
Looking downward
Your Ring Video Doorbell 2 "sees" the world in two ways. First, through a camera with a wide view of the world as illustrated below:
Secondly, through a network of "PIR" or passive infrared sensors that the Ring Doorbell uses for motion detection. In the illustration below, you can see the motion sensors have a much more focused field-of-view than the camera. As such, this view is pointed downward to catch motion within five to 30 feet of the Ring Doorbell and exclude motion sources outside that range.
Dealing with siding
If your house has siding, you'll need to take the angle of the siding into account when mounting your Ring Video Doorbell 2. As illustrated below, mounting the Ring Video Doorbell on siding will point the Ring Doorbell up, making it much more likely to catch passing traffic than the heat of visitors.
If you mount your Ring Video Doorbell 2 on siding, a wedge kit will properly angle your Ring Video Doorbell.
Dealing with Stairs
If your door is above ground level with stairs leading up to it, this can cause your Ring Doorbell 2 to miss visitors walking up your stairs. As a result, you may get motion alerts from passing traffic.
The solution is to use a wedge kit to lower the angle of your Ring Video Doorbell.
