Ring Video Doorbell 2: Hardwired vs. Battery Powered Operation

If your Ring Video Doorbell 2 is hardwired to an existing doorbell, that will keep it charged with normal use. If your Ring Video Doorbell 2 is not hardwired, the battery will need to be periodically recharged.

Battery Power

The rechargeable battery that comes included with your Ring Video Doorbell 2 will last approximately 1,000 activations with normal usage before needing to be recharged. For more information about battery life and recharging your Ring Doorbell 2, visit the charging guide.

Hardwiring

A Ring Doorbell 2 can also be connected to an existing mechanical or electronic doorbell that operates at a voltage between 8 volts AC and 24 volts AC. Once connected, pressing the button on your Ring Doorbell 2 will trigger your existing chime. The wiring from your existing doorbell will charge the battery in the Ring Video Doorbell 2, so with normal use your battery will stay charged.

WARNING: Electrical shock hazard. Disconnect power to installation area at your circuit breaker or fuse box before beginning installation. Always use caution when handling electrical wiring.

Installation by a qualified electrician may be required in your area. Refer to your local laws and building codes before performing electrical work; permits plus professional installation may be required by law.
