How to Physically Install Your Ring Video Doorbell with an Existing Doorbell

Installing your Ring Video Doorbell (1st generation) is a simple process. This article will give you a step-by-step guide to replacing your existing doorbell with a Ring Video Doorbell.

The Ring Video Doorbell (1st generation) included an optional diode. Other Ring doorbells do not require a diode. If you are unsure whether you have a Ring Video Doorbell 1st generation or 2nd Generation, click here.

Step One - Remove Your Existing Doorbell Button

Shut off power to your doorbell at the breaker. Then remove your existing doorbell button and disconnect the wires.

WARNING: Electrical shock hazard. Disconnect power to installation area at your circuit breaker or fuse box before beginning installation. Always use caution when handling electrical wiring.

Installation by a qualified electrician may be required in your area. Refer to your local laws and building codes before performing electrical work; permits plus professional installation may be required by law.

Step Two - Mount the Bracket

  • Click the level tool (included in the box) into the mounting bracket.
  • Place the mounting bracket so that you can access the wires for power.
  • Level the mounting bracket using the level tool.
  • Drive the screws into the holes.
    • If mounting on a masonry surface, use the mounting bracket as a template to mark pilot holes.
    • Drill holes and insert the anchors.
  • Remove the level tool from the mounting bracket.
 

Step Three - Connect the Wires

Connect the wires to the screws on the mounting bracket. It doesn't matter which order the wires are connected, just be sure the wires don't touch each other.

 

Step Four - For Digital Doorbells, Install the Included Diode

Step Five - Place Your Ring Video Doorbell on Mounting Bracket

Line up the tabs from the mounting bracket to the slots on the back of your Ring Video Doorbell. Don't be afraid to use a little force.

 

Step Six - Tighten the Security Screws

Use the included security screwdriver to tighten the two security screws to the bottom of the Ring Video Doorbell.
