Understanding the Exit Error Feature for Ring Alarm

The Exit Error feature on your Ring Alarm helps prevent false alarms and emergency dispatch being sent out for a false alarm caused by a door that was left open accidentally after you exit your home or business.

What is Exit Error?

Alarm signals that are triggered immediately after you arm your system are often by accident, causing false alarms and the possibility of unnecessary visits from emergency personnel. You’ll receive an automated call from the Ring monitoring center² letting you know that your main exit door was likely left open or ajar, and the alarm was triggered by accident.

The Exit Error signal and automated call is sent when the alarm triggers immediately at the end of the exit delay countdown. This happens after you’ve armed your Ring Alarm system. In this case, the Ring monitoring center will not request dispatch of emergency services unless you specifically request help.

NOTE: Exit Error does not apply to self-monitoring or assisted² monitoring. Professional monitoring² with a Ring Protect Pro plan¹ is required.

IMPORTANT: If you do not answer the automated Exit Error call, we will not request dispatch of emergency services.

How Exit Error works

When your Ring Alarm signals a possible Exit Error, here is what happens:

  1. The Ring Alarm siren at your location will sound.
  2. You will receive a push notification¹ to let you know that your Ring Alarm has been set off. If you have Do Not Disturb activated on your mobile device and have chosen to
, you should still receive the push notification. Remember to save the monitoring center phone number (
    833-209-2159
) as a contact on your mobile device and adjust your settings to allow calls through when in Do Not Disturb mode.
    .
  3. You have a 30-second window to disarm and cancel the alarm before you receive an automated call for an Exit Error.
  4. After 30 seconds, you’ll receive an automated call from the monitoring center notifying you of the alarm event. During the call you’ll be asked if you want to request emergency dispatch. If it’s not a true emergency, you can disarm your Ring Alarm on your Ring app dashboard¹ or on the Keypad at your home or business.
  5. If you do not answer the automated call or do not request emergency dispatch during the call, no action will be taken by the Ring Alarm monitoring center.
  6. After about 10 minutes, the Ring Alarm siren will stop sounding. If another sensor (such as a Contact Sensor, Motion Detector, or Glass Break Sensor) triggers your Ring Alarm after that, the siren will sound again at the location and the usual
    steps will be taken.

You may want to contact any neighbors who might hear the alarm siren to let them know that it’s sounding accidentally.

Exit Error frequently asked questions

How do I set up my Ring Alarm for Exit Error?

All Ring Alarm owners with professional monitoring² have Exit Error enabled by default. You cannot turn off this feature.

Will all doors trigger an Exit Error if accidentally left open?

Exit Error is only triggered by Contact Sensors that are assigned to your main door(s).

Will the Monitoring Center request emergency dispatch if I don’t answer the automated call?

No. If you do not answer the automated call from the monitoring center, there will be no request for emergency dispatch.

What Happens if a Neighbor Hears the Alarm Sounding and Calls for Help?

If a neighbor hears your alarm and calls for help, Ring monitoring cannot prevent emergency services from arriving at your residence or business. If you are concerned, immediately notify your neighbors that a false alarm was triggered by accident.

What if the Alarm is triggered again after an Exit Error call?

If after an automated Exit Error call your alarm is triggered by another sensor, you and your emergency contacts will receive a call from a live Ring monitoring center agent and the usual professional monitoring emergency response steps will be taken. If you or your contacts do not answer the live agent’s call or an invalid verbal password is provided, the agent will request dispatch of emergency services.
