Adjusting the video recording length for battery-powered devices

Your Ring app gives you the power to control how long your Ring devices record events, even if you don't respond to notifications. By lowering or raising your video recording length you can choose a longer time to see more of each event or less recording time in order to preserve battery life. 

This article will answer commonly asked questions concerning the video recording length control.

Video recording lengths for battery-powered devices

The video recording length control can be found on the following Ring battery-powered devices:

  • Ring Video Doorbell 
  • Ring Video Doorbell 2
  • Ring Video Doorbell 3
  • Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus
  • Stick Up Cam Battery
  • Door View Cam

In the Ring app, you can specify how long your Ring device will record If there’s a Motion Event that you don’t respond to. If you want to prolong your device's battery life, you can choose a shorter length of time. If you want longer videos of Motion Events and aren’t as concerned about battery life, choose a longer time length.

There are seven recording length options:

  • 15 seconds
  • 20 seconds (default setting)
  • 25 seconds
  • 30 seconds
  • 60 seconds
  • 90 seconds
  • 120 seconds

How to change your video recording length

To adjust the video recording controls, follow these instructions in the Ring app:

  • Open your Ring app and tap on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) on the top left of the Dashboard
  • Tap on Devices
  • Tap the device you want to adjust
  • Tap Device Settings
  • Tap Video Settings
  • Tap Video Recording Length
  • Select the amount of time you want your Ring device to record
  • Tap Save

You may get a notice warning that your choice will affect your battery life. You can always make a selection and change it to a shorter time if you feel your battery is draining too fast.

What are the minimum and maximum lengths I can the recording for?

The video recording length can be set from 15 seconds up to 120 seconds. 

Can I set different devices to different recording lengths?

Yes. Each device has its own individual video recording length control and they can be set to different recording lengths.
