Motion detection for wired Ring devices

The following articles answers common questions about motion detection as it is used in Ring wired (hardwired, mount and plug-in) devices.

Does motion detection at night work the same as during the day?

No, motion detection at night is slightly different.

During the day, your powered Ring device uses Advanced Motion Detection to actively look for objects within the defined Motion Zones you set.

During the night, the powered Ring device uses a Passive Infrared (PIR) Sensor to help it detect objects. The powered Ring device will see the object, then verify the object is really a motion by checking the PIR Sensor to verify that it is something with a heat signature as opposed to just being a change in lighting.

The motion detection on powered Ring devices can detect objects up to 30 feet away from the camera.

How do I temporarily disable motion detection?

If you would like to disable motion detection completely, please follow these steps:

  • Open the Ring app.
  • Tap the menu icon on the top left of the Dashboard.
  • Tap Devices.
  • Select the device want to disable motion detection for.
  • Tap Motion Settings from the list of options at the bottom of the app.
  • Tap Edit Motion Zones.
  • Tap the Motion Zone(s) you would like to disable.
  • Tap the bin icon.
  • Tap Delete.
  • Tap Save.

To re-enable a Motion Zone go to Motion Settings and tap on a zone to activate it again. Then, follow the prompts to save the change.

My Motion Zones are active, but I am not receiving any alerts. What do I do?

If you are not receiving Motion Alerts, try these steps below:

  • Verify your camera is picking up motion.
    • Review the Event History on your Dashboard to ensure that there is a record for the motion that took place at the time of the motion.
  • If there is no record, your Ring device didn’t capture an event during that time.
    • Double-check Motion Settings using the above guide and ensure your Motion Zones are correctly drawn and the Motion Sensitivity slider is properly set.
    • Make sure your device is connected to wifi in the Device Health section of the Ring app.
  • Verify there is no Motion Schedule enabled for the time of the event.
    • You will see a clock icon next to your Ring device on the dashboard of the Ring app if there is an active Motion Schedule.
  • If the above-mentioned options don't work, check your device settings:

I keep receiving false notifications from my Ring device when nothing is there. What can I do?

  • Check your Motion Zones to see if there is anything that can trigger a motion.
    • Remember: Smart Alerts allows you to choose only to receive Person Alerts and not to receive alerts when other motion is detected.
    • If your device is set up to receive alerts when other motion is detected, there is likely something within the Motion Zone triggering the motion. This could be a car, a moving tree, sunlight coming into the video or shadows moving.
    • Try adjusting your Motion Zones or your Motion Sensitivity slider.

My Ring device is facing a window. Does that affect the motion detection?

Windows generally block heat sources, which means when the Ring device uses its PIR (Passive Infrared) Sensor to detect motion, the Ring device will not be able to detect the motion through a window.

During the day, your powered Ring device uses Advanced Motion Detection, which is when the camera looks for changes physically in the environment. The Ring device should be able to see through a window during the day.

At night, your powered Ring device still uses Advanced Motion Detection but also uses Passive Infrared (PIR) to verify the motion. Since windows block heat sources, your Ring device will not be able to accurately view or record through a window at night.
