Fixing setup issues

Learn how to resolve issues with setting up a Ring device in the Ring app.

Preparing for setup

Light pattern guides

Check the light pattern guide to find out why your Ring device is not connecting.

Unable to connect your Ring device to your wifi network

If setup fails, check your Ring device's light pattern or audio message. For network changes, contact your internet provider or router manufacturer.

Setup failed: Incorrect wifi password

Follow these steps to confirm the wifi password is correct:

  1. Open your mobile device’s wifi settings.
  2. Select your network's info icon and tap
    Forget Network.
  3. Reconnect using your wifi password.
  4. If your mobile device cannot connect using the same wifi password after using Forget Network, contact your internet service provider.

Setup failed: Distance from wifi router or special characters in the wifi name

  • If your Ring device is far away from your router, use a wifi extender, such as
, or a mesh router to improve the wifi signal strength.
  • Remove special characters from your wifi network name (e.g. apostrophes, spaces, !, @, #, $, %, &).

Setup failed: Unable to connect to internet

  • Adjust firewall, ports, and protocols on your wifi router.
    .
  • Unplug all Ethernet cables from your router, except the main internet connection between your router and modem or wall outlet.
  • Test your internet connection by loading ring.com when connected to the same wifi network on your mobile device.
  • Having more than one wifi router can cause connection problems with Ring devices. Use only one router, or set up bridge mode with support from your internet service provider or router manufacturer, if needed.

Unable to scan the QR code

If your device has a removable faceplate or battery cover, the QR code might be underneath. You might also find the code on the product package or setup guide. Tap on the ? icon in the Ring app during this step for additional details.

  • Make sure you have enough lighting and the QR code is in focus.
  • If you are not able to scan, select
    Other Options
. Follow the in-app steps to manually enter the device PIN.

For devices without a QR code or PIN, follow these steps when prompted to scan the code:

  1. Tap
    Other Options.
  2. Tap
    Can't see the barcode?
  3. Tap
The Ring device being set up.
  4. Continue to follow the in-app prompts.

Unable to find your address

If your address doesn’t populate when you try to add your location, try these tips:

  • Turn on location permissions for the Ring app. Consult your mobile device provider for help, if needed.
  • Place the pin on the map for new or unlisted addresses.
  • Confirm you are signed in to the correct account, if you cannot find your existing location.
  • Manually enter your address.

Unable to find or connect to the Ring wifi network

The Ring wifi network is a wifi access point that appears when your device is in setup mode.

Unable to find your wifi network during setup

If your wifi network is not appearing during the network selection of the setup process, check the following:

  • Move the Ring device closer to your wifi router.
  • Verify your mobile device can connect to the wifi network.
  • If you have separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, and the 5 GHz is not appearing, try connecting to your 2.4 GHz network instead. Some Ring devices only support 2.4 GHz networks.
  • Use a wifi extender, such as
, or a mesh router to improve wifi signal strength.
