Devices compatible with video end-to-end encryption (E2EE)

Privacy, security and user control are foundational to Ring. That’s why we’re always looking for ways to help keep your account secure. End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is an opt-in feature that adds additional layers of protection to video and audio recordings made by compatible enrolled Ring devices.

The following article lists which mobile devices and Ring devices currently support E2EE.

We recommend you use the latest version of the Ring app in order to use the latest features.

Note: E2EE is not supported in Belgium.

Do I need both the Ring app and a Ring compatible device in order to use E2EE?

Yes, in order to use E2EE you will need to use both the Ring app installed on an enrolled mobile device and a compatible Ring device.

How to set up end-to-end encryption (E2EE)

Setting up your device in the Ring app for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) is easy.

Simply scroll down and follow these step-by-step instructions:

Step 1 - Update your Ring app (recommended)

E2EE is supported on version 5.34 or higher, but we always recommend you that you install the latest version of the app.

Step 2 - Make sure your Ring device supports E2EE

Check for your device in the list above.

Note: Battery-powered Ring devices do not support E2EE.

Step 3 - Go to Control Centre

  • Tap Video Management
  • Tap Advanced Settings
  • Tap End-to-End Encryption
  • Tap Got it on the disabled feature list

Step 4 - Encryption Setup

  • Tap Get Started
  • Follow the in-app instructions to enrol your account in end-to-end encryption
  • Generate New Passphrase -
    • Note: Write your passphrase down or store it in a secure password manager. When creating this passphrase, be sure to enter all lowercase letters, include the hyphens, and don’t add any spaces. If you lose your passphrase, you can’t enrol more mobile devices in E2EE, without starting over and re-enrolling. Also, you may lose access to E2EE videos that you have already recorded.

Step 5 - Enrol mobile devices

  • Tap Resume Setup
  • Follow the in-app instructions to enrol your mobile device in end-to-end encryption

Step 6  - Enrol Ring devices

  • Tap Resume Setup
  • Follow the in-app instructions to enrol your compatible Ring device in end-to-end encryption

Step 7 - Test your device

Once your enrolled Ring device has completed its update and setup, push the front button on your doorbell or trigger motion on your camera to complete the test. This will initialise your Ring device for E2EE.

To turn off E2EE, simply follow Step 3 of the above instructions, but this time choose to disable E2EE.
