Advanced Motion Detection in Ring Devices

Ring devices use of motion detection technology that activates when movement is detected within a certain distance of your Ring device. Once motion is detected, you will receive a notification in your Ring app, and your device will start recording. 

Advanced Motion Detection

All Ring devices make use of Advanced Motion Detection, which includes People Only Mode. This feature differentiates between people and other objects or animals. People Only Mode notifies you of motion if a person is detected in range of your device. Consequently, you'll receive less unwanted notifications, such as when a car drives past, or a pet comes in range of your device. 

In battery devices, you can also reduce the amount of unwanted notifications from the Ring app by enabling the Motion Verification feature. You can find out more about Motion Verification here. 

Motion Zones in the Ring App 

Motion Zones allow you to define a specific area that you want your Ring device to cover while ignoring everything outside of that area. By selecting ‘Motion Zones’ to cover only areas you want the Ring device to monitor, you can effectively monitor the area you want, as well as reduce the number of unnecessary motion alerts, such as cars driving by. 

There are two types of Motion Zone features, based on whether your Ring device is battery-powered or wired:

  • Adjustable Motion Zones - battery-powered devices
  • Customizable Motion Zones - wired devices

Adjustable Motion Zones for Battery-powered Devices 

Adjustable Motion Zones is enabled in all battery-powered Ring devices, and uses passive infrared (PIR) sensors to detect motion. By enabling you to adjust the sensitivity of your motion sensors, you can receive only the alerts you care about most.  

Adjustable motion sensors work by identifying visitors based on a change in temperature, and sending a signal to your smart device. You can control the sensors' range and sensitivity in the Ring app which can also be optimised for low-power operations to save on battery power. 

Each sensor detects about a third of the total coverage area, as can be seen in the image below:

  • Ring Video Doorbell
  • Ring Video Doorbell 2 
  • Ring Video Doorbell 3
  • Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus 
  • Ring Door View Cam 
  • Ring Stick Up Cam Battery and Plug-In 
  • Ring Spotlight Cam Battery 

Customisable Motion Zones for Wired Devices

Customisable Motion Zones are featured in all of Ring's AC-powered products, which allow for a fuller feature set and greater degree of customisation.

This system’s customisation options let you draw up to three areas in the camera’s view to detect motion in. These "motion zones" allow you to define a specific area that you want your Ring to cover, while ignoring everything outside that area.

By drawing your motion zones to exclude high-frequency areas such as public paths and roads, you can reduce the number of "false positive" motion notifications (such as cars driving by) and greatly increase the effectiveness of your Ring device.

My motion zones are active, but I am not receiving any alerts. What do I do?

If you are not receiving notifications for your motion alerts, try the steps below:

  • Verify that your camera is picking up motion.
    • Review the ‘Event History’ on the dashboard to ensure that there is a record for motions that took place during that time.
  • If there is no record, your Ring device didn’t capture an event during that time.
    • Double-check motion settings using the above guide and ensure your motion zones are correctly set and optimised.
    • Make sure your device is connected to wifi via the Device Health option in the Ring app. 
  • Verify there is no Motion Schedule enabled during the time of the event.
    • You will see a clock icon next to your Ring device on the dashboard of the Ring app if there is an active Motion Schedule set to the current time.

I keep receiving false notification from my Ring device when nothing is there. What can I do?

  • Check your Motion Zones to see if there is anything that can trigger a motion.
  • Is your Ring device’s Motion Zone covering a busy street or sidewalk? You may need to lower the zone to exclude an area.
  • For battery devices, turn on Motion Verification and People Only Mode, and reduce your device’s motion sensitivity. 
  • For wired devices, adjust your motion sensitivity down to People Only Mode.
