Using Pre-Roll and Advanced Pre-Roll
With Pre-Roll or Advanced Pre-Roll, select Ring devices can begin recording video a few seconds prior to motion detection or a doorbell press.
This feature requires a compatible Ring Home subscription.
Without a Ring Home Plan, Pre-Roll is shown as a picture-in-picture during a Live View when answering an alert. If you tap on the Pre-Roll picture-in-picture, the screen expands and Live View appears as the smaller image. Advanced Pre-Roll is only available on all wired Video Doorbells and Security Cameras.
Using Pre-Roll
Pre-Roll is available on select battery-powered doorbells.
- Works in well-illuminated areas. Low light conditions may affect the Pre-Roll functionality at night.
- Pre-Roll will capture the previous four seconds before a motion event is triggered.
- Pre-Roll is enabled by default in the Ring app.
To turn Pre-Roll on or off
Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.
Tap more (•••) on the camera you want to access.
Tap your device's Settings.

- TapVideo Settings.
- TapPre-Roll. Toggle the switch to turn Pre-Roll on or off.
Using Advanced Pre-Roll
Advanced Pre-Roll is always enabled on all wired Video Doorbells and Security Cameras.
- Advanced Pre-Roll will capture the previous six seconds before a motion event is triggered.
- Records in full color and high definition.
- Has full functionality on low light.
- Has full sound in each recording.
