How to Use and Update Your Verbal Password

Verbal password1 is a word or number created by you to provide an added layer of security. The Ring Monitoring Center will use verbal password to confirm that you or your emergency contacts are authorized to cancel emergency response when called during an Alarm event or requested using the SOS for cameras button. If you are signed up for Professional Monitoring1 through a Ring Protect Plan, you will be asked to create a verbal password during monitoring setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Do I Need to Share My Verbal Password With?

Share your Verbal Password with all of your emergency contacts to ensure they can cancel emergency response during the Ring Monitoring Center call in the event of a false alarm. If you use a landline as an emergency contact phone number, give the Verbal Password to any trusted individual, such as a family member, roommate, or employee, and who is likely to answer the phone if you’re not around.

How is the Verbal Password Used?

When your Ring Alarm is triggered, the monitoring center will call your emergency contacts one at a time. When the contact answers, the monitoring center agent will introduce themselves and ask for the verbal password to confirm that they are speaking to someone you trust. If the alarm is triggered accidentally, the emergency contact can use the verbal password to cancel the alarm.

What if I Forget My Verbal Password?

If you or your emergency contacts forget your verbal password, alarm dispatch cannot be cancelled. Also the monitoring center cannot share details about the emergency or follow instructions from you or your emergency contacts. The monitoring center won’t tell you if the verbal password you provided is incorrect, but they will attempt to call other contacts and dispatch services as needed. This may lead to false alarm fees which add up over time for some jurisdictions.

1 A compatible Ring Protect subscription is required to enroll in the Ring Alarm professional monitoring service. Professional monitoring service is available only within the U.S. (all 50 states, but not U.S. territories) and in Canada (excluding Quebec). Ring does not own its own professional monitoring center. Smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring is not available for a business or commercially zoned address. See Ring alarm licenses at: ring.com/licenses. Additional permit or false alarm fees may apply depending on your local jurisdiction. Additional charges may apply in areas that require permits or guard response service for alarm verification.
